(JOURNAL PHOTO) More than 300 passengers and crew members on a cruise out of Bayonne became ill on a two-week trip and required treatment when they returned Saturday. The Centers for Disease Control said 307 of the 2,112 passengers and 14 of the 952 crew members were sickened by a norovirus while on the Celebrity Summit, which had sailed from the Cape Liberty Cruise Port on Sept. 21. None had to be hospitalized, and over-the-counter medicines administered on the ship sped recovery time, Royal Caribbean officials said. Celebrity Summit arrived at Cape Liberty on Saturday and we conducted an extensive and thorough sanitizing on board the ship and within the cruise terminal as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to help prevent any illness from affecting the next sailing, said Cynthia Martinez, spokeswoman for Royal Caribbean, which owns Celebrity Cruise Lines. The norovirus is common on cruise ships, Bayonne Health Officer Vincent Rivelli said. The CDC describes the norovirus as being highly contagious and can spread from person to person, by contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces. The symptoms are stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. A resident of the Alexan City View Apartments, near the cruise port, expressed concern about the outbreak. I was worried that the sickness would spread to the residents, said Arthur Muse.
Sporting a new-look svelte frame, the celebrity chefs latest passion will see him put his body through the ringer in the notorious race so challenging it has bought the best in the game to their knees – and at times tears. But Ramsay is ready to embrace the challenge which is likely to take him in excess of 12 hours to complete. “Its the only time I am going to have a tattoo in my life, Ramsay has revealed ahead of the race. “When I finish Kona and get a little ironman tattoo on the corner of my ankle. This famed torture test, dominated by a string of battle-hardened Australians in recent years, involves 3.8km of swimming, 180km of riding and a 42.2km marathon run through Hawaiis ultra-hit and windy lava fields. Its a race so tough it can strip weight off even the fittest of men and women with Australian favourite Pete Jacobs expects to drop three or so kilos during his eight plus hours of racing. A passionate runner, Ramsay has only recently been bitten by the ironman bug but has admitted he is hooked. “It was something I always wanted to do when I hit 40 because chefs need to stay fit, active, he told ironman.com. “Ive done 15, 20 marathons, 10 ultra-marathons and I love the freedom of the bike and swim. “Its been on my mind for the past five years. While the race is harrowing and the training at times excruciating, Ramsay says it is his great escape from business commitments. “I do it to relax. Its time to myself. Its quality time, ” he said. “I cant sit down and just watch television or play games or videos. Life it too short.
